Roan Antelope Discovery Site (Zambia)

Weather…

The Roan Antelope Discovery Site in Luanshya marks the birthplace of modern mining in the Zambian Copperbelt. In June 1902, prospector William Collier was hunting near the Luanshya River when he shot a roan antelope. Upon reaching the fallen animal, he noticed the distinct green staining of malachite on the rock where the antelope lay, revealing a massive copper deposit. This serendipitous discovery led to the establishment of the Roan Antelope Mine, which for decades was one of the most productive mining operations in the British Empire. The find triggered a mining boom that fundamentally reshaped Zambia's economy, infrastructure, and urban demographics. Today, a monument stands at the site to commemorate Collier and the historic event that laid the foundation for the country's industrial sector. It remains a symbolic site for the town of Luanshya, representing the vast mineral wealth that defines the nation's history.
