Maamba Thermal Power Plant (Zambia)

Weather…

The Maamba Thermal Power Plant is the largest coal-fired power station in Zambia, located in the Sinazongwe District of the Southern Province. The facility is a joint venture between Nava Bharat Ventures of India and Zambia’s ZCCM-IH, and it was officially commissioned in 2016. With an installed capacity of 300 megawatts from two 150 MW units, it plays a critical role in diversifying Zambia's energy mix, which has historically been over-reliant on hydropower. The plant utilizes low-grade coal from the adjacent Maamba collieries, ensuring a cost-effective fuel supply and promoting local value addition. It employs modern circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) technology, which gives higher efficiency and lower environmental impact compared to traditional coal plants. During periods of drought, the Maamba plant is vital for mitigating power shortages caused by falling water levels in major dams. The project involved an investment of over $800 million and is a cornerstone of the regional economy.
