The Hajhir Mountains form the rugged heart of Socotra Island and host the highest peaks of the archipelago. The highest point, Jabal Mashanig, rises up to 1,503 meters above sea level and dominates the central landscape of the island. Geologically, these mountains consist mainly of Precambrian granite, which has been shaped by erosion over millions of years into distinct, needle-like spires. This mountain massif is a biodiversity hotspot, sheltering an extraordinary number of endemic plant species that are found nowhere else on Earth. The cloud formation at the peaks provides a humid microclimate, enabling the existence of dense mist forests and unique ecosystems. Historically, the inaccessible valleys provided protection to the inhabitants and served as a retreat area during various invasion attempts on the island.

The mountains are located in the interior of Socotra Island, typically accessed via dirt tracks from Hadibo. Hiring a local Bedouin guide is strongly advised.
Best season
