Grimmen is a town rich in tradition located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, which has preserved its medieval layout to this day. Planned and founded in the 13th century, it is distinguished by significant examples of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Most notable are its three massive town gates, the Mill Gate, the Stralsund Gate, and the Greifswald Gate, as well as the early Gothic St. Mary's Church. In more recent history, Grimmen gained prominence as the center of oil and natural gas extraction in Northern Germany, a heritage that is meticulously documented in the local Petroleum Museum. Geographically, the town is situated in the flat plains of Western Pomerania, surrounded by fertile farmland and the marshlands of the Trebel River. Today, Grimmen serves as an essential regional hub between the Hanseatic cities of Stralsund and Greifswald, offering a mix of historic charm and modern attractions like the Grimmen Zoo.
