Fermhin Forest is an extraordinary site on the Dixam Plateau of Socotra Island, housing the world's largest and densest concentration of Dragon Blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari). These iconic trees, with their distinctive umbrella-shaped crowns, give the landscape a prehistoric appearance and are the most recognizable hallmark of the Socotra archipelago. The Fermhin Forest is a central part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and represents a fragile ecosystem that evolved through isolation over millions of years. The tree's name is derived from the red resin that oozes when the bark is damaged, which has been used since antiquity for medicinal purposes, as a dye, and in magic. Getting there
Reaching the Diksam Plateau requires a specialized 4x4 vehicle journey from the main coastal settlements of Socotra. The rough dirt tracks winding up the steep mountainside are challenging and demand an experienced local driver.
Best season
The months between October and April are universally considered the best time to visit the island, avoiding the fierce and dangerous monsoon winds that completely isolate the region during the harsh summer season.
Terrain & paths
The high-altitude plateau features rocky, uneven ground interspersed with the iconic dragon's blood trees. Walking among the ancient trees involves navigating limestone karst formations and loose, stony paths.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with excellent ankle support are essential for the rugged limestone terrain. Bring strong sun protection, a windbreaker for the breezy altitudes, and plenty of water, as there are no facilities.
Parking
Vehicles are usually parked at designated, informal clearing areas at the edge of the plateau or near local pastoral settlements. From these spots, all further exploration of the ancient forest is done entirely on foot.
Safety
Always explore the plateau with a mandatory local Socotri guide. The terrain can be treacherous with hidden crevices in the limestone, and weather conditions at higher altitudes can change with surprising rapidity.
Time needed
A comprehensive visit to the forest usually requires at least a half-day excursion from a nearby base camp. Many visitors choose to camp overnight on the plateau to witness the surreal landscape at sunrise and sunset.
