Rada'a lies in Al Bayda governorate about 160 kilometres south-east of Sanaa on a fertile plateau. The city's signature monument is the Amiriya madrasa, erected in 1504 under the Tahirid sultan Amir bin Abd al-Wahhab and consisting of a mosque and an attached Quranic school. It ranks among the finest examples of Yemeni-Mamluk architecture: a square interior covered in white stucco arabesques supports six domes whose insides are painted with polychrome murals of geometric and floral patterns. The painstaking restoration of the 1990s was honoured in 2007 with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, one of the most prestigious international prizes for the preservation of Islamic heritage. Under the Tahirids, Rada'a was one of the most important cities of southern Arabia and housed a library of hundreds of manuscripts. The surrounding plateau yields barley, grapes and almonds, and local cuisine uses traditional stone ovens for bread and lamb dishes seasoned with aromatic wild herbs.
