Lubenice
Lubenice is a prehistoric stone village on the island of Cres, perched on a dramatic cliff 378 meters above the sea. With a history spanning over 4,000 years, it was once a strategic fortress. Today, it remains a cluster of ancient stone houses and narrow alleys with only a handful of inhabitants, offering a rare glimpse into medieval Mediterranean life. Directly below the village lies the Sveti Ivan beach, frequently cited as one of the most beautiful hidden beaches in the world. Reaching it on foot requires a steep 45-minute hike, making it a peaceful retreat for those who make the effort. Many travelers choose to visit the beach by boat from nearby towns like Valun or Cres. Every summer, the village hosts the 'Lubenice Musical Evenings', featuring classical music performances in its small squares. The acoustics provided by the ancient stone structures are exceptional. Local gastronomy focuses on Cres lamb and aromatic honey, which can be sampled in the local tavern. The drive to Lubenice is an adventure in itself, as the road is very narrow and winds through a rugged landscape. The view from the village walls during sunset, looking out towards the Istrian peninsula and the open Adriatic, is considered one of the most panoramic sights in Croatia.
