Over the centuries, the facility was reinforced and modified by the Ottomans, the Portuguese, and eventually the British. The fortress consists of massive stone ramparts and circular towers that rise directly from the volcanic rock, providing a commanding 360-degree view of the Gulf of Aden. Sira played a pivotal role in defending Aden against the Portuguese fleet in 1513 and during the British capture of the city in 1839.
