Comacchio (Italy)

Weather…

Comacchio is the historic capital of the Po Delta Park and one of Italy's most unique water-bound towns. Built on a cluster of 13 islands connected by elegant brick bridges, it is widely known as the 'Little Venice' of the Romagna region. Its architectural signature is the Trepponti bridge, dating back to 1634, which features five grand staircases merging over the canals. The town has remained deeply connected to its fishing heritage, particularly eel fishing; the 'Manifattura dei Marinati' is a working museum where you can see eels being marinated according to centuries-old recipes. The vast surrounding lagoons (Valli di Comacchio) are a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers, famous for their large colonies of wild pink flamingos. In the town center, the Museum of the Roman Ship displays the perfectly preserved cargo of a 1st-century BC merchant vessel found nearby. Visitors can also enjoy the seven nearby sandy beaches (Lidi di Comacchio) or take a traditional 'batana' boat tour through the narrow canals. The town is best reached by car from Ferrara or Ravenna.
