Cisterns of Tawila (Yemen)

Weather…

The Cisterns of Tawila, also known as the Cisterns of Aden, are a monumental feat of ancient hydraulic engineering located in the Crater district of Aden. This impressive array of interconnected basins was carved directly into the volcanic tufa of the Shamsan Mountains. Their origins are attributed to the Himyarite Kingdom around the 1st century BC, though they were expanded and restored under various rulers in subsequent centuries. The cisterns are ingeniously designed to intercept, filter, and store torrential floodwaters rushing down from the mountain slopes, providing a critical water supply for the arid port city of Aden. During the British colonial era in the 19th century, the complex underwent extensive restoration to return it to functional use. Today, the system comprises approximately 18 identified basins with a collective capacity of several million liters. They stand not only as a technical marvel but also as one of Yemen's most prominent historical landmarks.
