San Felipe Fortress (Venezuela)

Weather…

San Felipe Fortress, also known as Castillo Libertador, is an imposing fortification in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Built between 1732 and 1741, the facility was commissioned by the Real Compañía Guipuzcoana to protect valuable warehouses from pirates and English invaders. The fortress is characterized by its robust construction of massive stone blocks and its strategic seaside location. Throughout history, it has been the scene of significant events, such as the surrender of Spanish troops in 1823, which marked the end of colonial rule in Venezuela. Later, the building served as a state prison where prominent figures were detained. The architecture includes barracks, ammunition stores, and defensive walls that now form part of the nation's historical heritage. Despite its proximity to modern naval facilities, the Castillo remains an important symbol of the independence struggle and the country's military history. It gives a fascinating insight into colonial defensive technology and the harsh conditions of that era.
