Scala Regia (Vatican)

Weather…

The Scala Regia (Royal Staircase) is the formal ceremonial entrance to the Apostolic Palace, connecting it to the portico of St. Peter’s Basilica. Its current Baroque design is the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who reconstructed it between 1663 and 1666 for Pope Alexander VII. Bernini faced a significant architectural challenge: the site was a narrow, tapering corridor wedged between the basilica and the palace. To overcome these constraints, he employed a brilliant forced perspective technique, gradually narrowing the stairs and decreasing the distance between the supporting columns toward the top. This illusion makes the staircase appear far more elongated and grandiose than its physical reality. At the foot of the stairs stands Bernini's equestrian statue of Constantine the Great, depicting the moment of his miraculous vision before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. The barrel-vaulted ceiling is richly decorated with gilded stuccos, enhancing the theatricality of the space. To this day, the Scala Regia remains a vital part of the Vatican's protocol, used for papal processions and the reception of high-ranking heads of state.
