Santo Spirito Hospital (Vatican)

Weather…

The Ospedale di Santo Spirito in Saxia is Europe's oldest hospital, boasting a history that spans over a thousand years. It was originally founded in the 8th century by King Ina of Wessex as a hostel for Anglo-Saxon pilgrims. In the 12th century, Pope Innocent III expanded the facility into a state-of-the-art hospital and entrusted its management to the Order of the Holy Spirit. The current monumental complex largely dates from the reign of Pope Sixtus IV, who oversaw its Renaissance reconstruction between 1471 and 1478. A highlight of the complex is the 'Corsia Sistina,' a grand ward measuring over 120 meters in length, adorned with magnificent frescoes depicting the life of Sixtus IV and the hospital's founding. The building also houses a precious historical library and a museum of medical history. To this day, parts of the complex continue to function as a medical facility, standing as an exceptional example of the intersection of architecture, art, and Christian charity.
