Pauline Chapel (Vatican)

Weather…

The Pauline Chapel (Cappella Paolina) is a significant chapel in the Apostolic Palace, best known for containing the final two frescoes painted by Michelangelo. Commissioned by Pope Paul III in 1537 and designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the chapel was intended for private papal use and the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament. Michelangelo’s frescoes, 'The Conversion of Saul' and 'The Crucifixion of St. Peter', were executed between 1542 and 1550 when the artist was in his late seventies. These powerful works differ from his earlier Sistine Chapel paintings, exhibiting a more somber and introspective style. The chapel’s walls are also adorned with frescoes by Lorenzo Sabbatini and Federico Zuccari, depicting various scenes from the lives of the apostles. Historically, the Pauline Chapel has played a crucial role in the papal conclave, serving as the gathering place where cardinals offer their final prayers before entering the Sistine Chapel for voting. After a major seven-year restoration completed in 2009, the chapel's artistic brilliance has been preserved, though it remains closed to the general public to maintain its sacred character.
