Ethiopian College Terrace (Vatican)

Weather…

The terrace of the Ethiopian College (Pontificio Collegio Etiopico) is a prominent topographical feature in the southwestern sector of the Vatican Gardens, located directly behind the apse of St. Peter's Basilica. It is the only seminary located entirely within the walls of Vatican City State. The current building was commissioned by Pope Pius XI in 1928 and completed in 1930, built upon a reinforced terrace to accommodate the sloping terrain of the Vatican Hill. The history of the Ethiopian community at the Vatican dates back to 1441, when Pope Eugene IV assigned them the nearby church of Santo Stefano degli Abissini after the Council of Florence. Geographically, the terrace provides a unique vantage point overlooking the Leonine Wall and the secluded western gardens. The architectural style of the college is understated and functional, designed to blend with the natural greenery and the historic surrounding structures. Today, the terrace and the college continue to serve as a vital link between the Roman Catholic Church and the ancient Christian traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea, symbolizing centuries of ecumenical relations.
