Eastern Ridge Plateau (Vatican)

Weather…

The Eastern Ridge Plateau in the Vatican is a significant geomorphological formation marking the transition from the Vatican Hill to the Tiber plain. This elevated surface has been shaped over centuries through massive earthworks and the construction of Vatican defense systems. Geologically, the ridge consists of solid tuff and sandy deposits, providing a stable foundation for monumental walls and buildings. The strategic importance of this plateau was known since antiquity, as it offered an excellent overview of the access route to Mons Vaticanus. Today, this area houses parts of the Vatican administration and gardens laid out on the fortified terraces. The relief drops steeply to the east, underlining the defensive character of the area and forming the natural border of the city-state. The design of the plateau combines utilitarian defensive architecture with the aesthetic elegance of papal residence culture.
