Casina Pio IV Plateau (Vatican)

Weather…

The Casina Pio IV Plateau in the heart of the Vatican Gardens is an artificially leveled surface hosting one of the most significant architectural complexes of the late Renaissance. Originally situated on a natural outcrop of the Vatican Hill, the terrain was reshaped in the 16th century under Pope Paul IV and his successor Pius IV to accommodate the magnificent villa and its courtyard. Architect Pirro Ligorio utilized the plateau's slight elevation to create an ensemble radiating harmony between nature and architecture. The plateau is surrounded by dense groves and fountain systems that cool the microclimate and generate a secluded atmosphere. Today, this area is the seat of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and serves as a meeting point for international scholars. The plateau's topography allows for excellent symmetry of the buildings while offering protection from the surrounding steeper slopes.
