The Quonset huts in Luganville on Espiritu Santo are iconic remnants of the massive United States military buildup during World War II. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Luganville was transformed into one of the largest Allied logistical hubs in the South Pacific, supporting the push toward Japan. These prefabricated, semi-cylindrical corrugated steel structures were deployed by the thousands due to their portability and ease of assembly, serving as barracks, hospitals, and supply depots. Today, many of these huts remain scattered throughout the town, repurposed into homes, workshops, and retail spaces. They stand as a testament to the sudden industrialization of the island and the lasting impact of the American presence on local infrastructure. Preserving these structures is vital for documenting Vanuatu's pivotal role in the Pacific theater and the transition toward the modern era.
