Libertad is a city in the San José Department, founded in the mid-19th century by Italian immigrants, primarily Waldensians. Its name, meaning 'Liberty,' reflects the aspirations of its founders who were seeking religious freedom in Uruguay. The city is located in a fertile agricultural region, and its economy has traditionally been linked to farming, especially the cultivation of potatoes and vegetables, as well as dairy production. Libertad serves as an important local center, providing commercial and educational services to the surrounding rural areas. The city has a strong social and community structure, evident in its numerous clubs and institutions. In more recent times, its proximity to the expanding Montevideo metropolitan area has led to new developments and some population growth. A notable feature of the city is the Libertad Penitentiary (Unidad Nº 4 Santiago Vázquez), one of the largest in the country, which is located on the outskirts of the town and is a significant local employer.
