The Montes del Queguay is an extensive area of native gallery forests that stretch along the banks of the Queguay Grande River and its tributaries in the Paysandú Department, Uruguay. Designated as part of the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) in 2014, it is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of native forest in the country. Covering nearly 50,000 hectares, it is home to exceptional biodiversity. The forests are composed of over 100 species of trees and shrubs, including important species like 'Coronilla' (Scutia buxifolia) and 'Arrayán' (Blepharocalyx salicifolius). The fauna is equally rich, including threatened species such as the giant otter, the capybara, and a wide variety of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Historically, the area was a refuge for the indigenous Charrúa people. Geologically, the region is characterized by gentle hills and the Queguay river system. The Montes del Queguay are crucial for maintaining water quality and regulating hydrological flow in the region.
