Guichón is a small city in the Paysandú Department, known for its unique geographical location amidst extensive palm groves. It bears the nickname 'Capital of the Palm Groves' (Capital del Palmar) because it is surrounded by the Butia yatay palm, which gives the landscape a distinctive character. The city was founded in the early 20th century around a railway station, and its economy is based mainly on agriculture, forestry, and livestock farming. In recent years, Guichón has become an important center for ecotourism. This is primarily due to its proximity to the Montes del Queguay National Park, a protected area of great ecological importance with high biodiversity. The region gives opportunities for activities such as hiking, bird watching, and exploring the pristine nature. The city's name comes from one of its first settlers, the French immigrant Teodoro Guichón.
