Ilovaisk is a city in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It was founded in the 1860s as a small settlement during the construction of the Kursk-Kharkiv-Azov railway. Its growth and importance are intrinsically linked to the railway, and it quickly developed into one of the most important railway junctions in the Donbas basin. This strategic importance made the city a key target during various conflicts, including the Russian Civil War and World War II. The city's economy traditionally centered on railway services, repair shops, and related industries. In recent history, Ilovaisk gained international notoriety as the site of the brutal Battle of Ilovaisk in August 2014, during the War in Donbas. The battle resulted in significant destruction to the city and heavy losses for the Ukrainian armed forces. Since then, the city has been under the control of Russian-backed forces. Due to the ongoing conflict, tourism in the region is non-existent, and travel there is extremely dangerous and not advised. Prior to the conflict, Ilovaisk was a typical Donbas industrial town with a way of life centered around the railway. Cultural facilities like Palaces of Culture and local museums reflected its industrial and Soviet heritage. Getting there was primarily by train, given its role as a hub, with connections to major cities in Ukraine and Russia. The city serves as a stark reminder of how conflict can dramatically alter the destiny of a place.
