Pokrovsk is a strategically vital industrial center in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine, serving as a gateway to the Donbas basin. The city was founded in 1875 as the Grishino railway station and expanded rapidly alongside the development of the rail network and the exploitation of local coal deposits. During the Soviet era, the city was known as Krasnoarmiisk before being renamed Pokrovsk in 2016 as part of decommunization efforts. The local economy is almost entirely centered on coal mining and related heavy industries, with the Pokrovske coal mine being one of the largest and most modern in the country. Situated at the junction of major railway lines and highways, Pokrovsk is a central logistical hub for the entire region. Despite its strong industrial character, the city hosts significant educational institutions, such as the Donetsk National Technical University, which was relocated here after 2014. Pokrovsk plays a crucial role in Ukraine's energy independence through the production of high-quality coking coal. In recent years, the city has gained immense strategic importance within the context of the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.
