Bakhchisaray Cave Monastery (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Holy Dormition Cave Monastery in Bakhchysarai is one of the oldest and most significant Orthodox monastic centers in Crimea. It was likely founded in the 8th or 9th century by Byzantine monks fleeing the iconoclastic persecutions. The complex is carved directly into the steep limestone cliffs of the Maryam-Dere gorge, giving it a unique architectural character. During the era of the Bakhchysarai Khanate, the monastery enjoyed the protection of the Crimean Khans, underscoring its importance as a Christian enclave in a predominantly Muslim region. In the 19th century, the site underwent major renovations and expansion, becoming a premier pilgrimage destination within the Russian Empire. Closed by Soviet authorities in 1921, the monastery was revived in the 1990s. Today, the complex comprises several rock-cut churches, monks' cells, and outbuildings that blend harmoniously with the dramatic natural landscape of the Crimean mountains.
