Nyero Rock Paintings (Uganda)

Weather…

The Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumi District are among the most significant examples of prehistoric art in Uganda and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site comprises six rock shelters, three of which feature particularly elaborate geometric paintings in red and white. These depictions, showing circles, concentric patterns, and stylized canoes, are estimated to be about 1,000 years old and are attributed to the Twa (pygmy) people, who once inhabited large parts of East Africa. The paintings are not only artistically valuable but likely also served ritual purposes, such as fertility ceremonies or invocations for rain. Despite centuries of exposure to weather and light, many details remain surprisingly well-preserved. The local Iteso community still regards the rocks as a sacred place where spirits reside. Researchers use the site to better understand the migration patterns and cultural diversity of the African continent's early inhabitants. Nyero is a silent witness to the deep connection between man and nature in the distant past.
