Nur Mountains (Turkey)

Weather…

The Nur Mountains, also known as the Amanos Mountains, run parallel to the Gulf of Iskenderun in southeastern Turkey. This mountain range separates the Anatolian plateau from the northern Syrian plains and plays a crucial geographic role in the Hatay province. The peaks reach elevations of up to 2,240 meters and are often covered with dense forests of fir, beech, and oak. Geologically, the Nur Mountains are part of the East African Rift system and exhibit significant tectonic activity. Historically, the passes of the Nur Mountains, especially the 'Syrian Gates' (Belen Pass), were strategically vital for trade caravans and military campaigns between Anatolia and the Levant. The mountains also function as a climate barrier, intercepting moist air masses from the Mediterranean and resulting in higher rainfall on the western slopes. In antiquity, the region was famous for its high-quality cedar timber used for major construction projects throughout the Near East. Today, the range is a vital corridor for migratory birds and hosts a diverse fauna.
