İskenderun Iron and Steel Works (İsdemir) (Turkey)

Weather…

The İskenderun Iron and Steel Works (İsdemir) is the only integrated plant in Turkey that produces both long and flat steel products simultaneously. Established in 1970 in the Payas district, it commenced operations in 1975 with technical assistance from the Soviet Union to advance the country's industrialization. Its strategic location on the Gulf of İskenderun provides direct access to its own deep-water port, making the import of iron ore and coal, as well as the export of finished products, highly efficient. In 2002, İsdemir was privatized and integrated into the Erdemir Group, leading to massive investments in plant modernization. Today, the works have a raw steel capacity exceeding 5 million tons per year, supplying key industries such as construction, automotive, and shipbuilding. As one of the largest employers in Hatay province, İsdemir is an indispensable cornerstone of Turkish heavy industry and a significant factor in foreign trade.
