Medina of Sousse (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Medina of Sousse is an outstanding example of a fortified coastal city from the early Islamic period and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was established in the 9th century under the rule of the Aghlabid dynasty as part of a coastal defense network against Christian raids in the Mediterranean. The most prominent structure is the Ribat, a fortress-monastery built in 821 AD, which served both religious and military functions. Its watchtower provides a strategic view over the harbor and the surrounding city. Adjacent to it stands the Great Mosque, which uniquely lacks a minaret and features thick, defensive walls that give it the appearance of a fortress. The Medina is enclosed by nearly two kilometers of stone ramparts built from massive limestone blocks. Inside, a network of narrow alleys and bustling souks has preserved its medieval layout. Sousse served as a critical maritime hub, combining trade and defense to secure the naval power of Muslim fleets in the Mediterranean basin.
