Skifa el Kahla (Tunisia)

Weather…

Skifa el Kahla, also known as Bab Zouila, is the monumental fortified gateway to the city of Mahdia and a prime example of Fatimid military architecture in Tunisia. Originally constructed between 916 and 921 AD, the gate formed an integral part of the massive defensive walls that protected the strategic peninsula. The name 'Skifa el Kahla' translates to 'The Dark Porch,' describing its long, windowless vaulted corridor extending over 50 meters, designed to trap and confuse invaders. Following the destruction of Mahdia's fortifications by Spanish forces in 1554, the gate was rebuilt during the Ottoman period in the 16th century, incorporating surviving Fatimid foundations. As the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate, Mahdia was once an impregnable maritime fortress, and this gateway was its most secure entrance. Today, Skifa el Kahla serves as the main entrance to Mahdia’s medina and hosts a traditional market on certain days. The roof of the structure provides a spectacular panoramic view of the ancient city layout and the nearby historic harbor.
