Foa Island (Tonga)

Weather…

Foa Island is the second largest island in the Haʻapai group and is situated just north of Lifuka, to which it is connected by a 600-meter-long causeway. Covering an area of approximately 13.39 square kilometers, the island is renowned for its lush coconut plantations and spectacular coral reefs that encircle its shores. One of the most significant cultural features of Foa is the Houmaleʻeia petroglyphs, which are ancient rock carvings found on the northern tip of the island. These prehistoric artworks provide valuable insights into the early spiritual and social life of the Tongan people. The island's geography is predominantly flat, with a maximum elevation of only 20 meters, making its coastline particularly vulnerable to tidal changes. Foa features a tranquil environment with traditional Tongan villages that maintain a lifestyle closely tied to the sea and agriculture. The surrounding waters are part of a protected marine environment, providing a habitat for diverse tropical fish species and seasonal humpback whales.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to visit Foa Island is the dry season from May to October, when the beaches are clean and the water is crystal clear. From November to April, tropical downpours and stronger winds can affect beach days.
🌅
Best time of day
Sunrise is spectacular as the first rays bathe the fine sandy beaches in warm light - handy for walks and photography. Late afternoon, the shallow water floods over the reefs, offering excellent snorkelling opportunities at low tide.
📜
Etiquette
Respect local communities and ask for permission before entering private beach sections. Collecting corals, shells or marine life is not allowed in order to protect the ecosystem.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable water shoes are recommended because the seabed in front of the reefs can be covered with sharp rock or coral debris in places. A sun hat and UV-protective sunglasses are essential for long beach hours.
🧭
Getting there
Foa Island is connected to Lifuka Island by a causeway, so you can easily reach it by car or taxi from Pangai. The crossing over the causeway takes only a few minutes and is possible on foot as well.
🦌
What to expect
Tides significantly affect snorkelling conditions - at low tide, some reef areas may be shallow, so you may need to wait until the water rises. Currents around the causeway can be strong; always swim in supervised areas.
