Nino Konis Santana National Park, named after a famous resistance leader, is East Timor's first and largest protected area. Established in 2007, the park covers an area of approximately 1,236 square kilometers in the east of the country and includes both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. It is home to the country's largest lake, Ira Lalaro, as well as extensive tropical lowland rainforests and significant coral reefs. In addition to its ecological diversity, the park is also a site of great cultural and historical value, with numerous prehistoric cave paintings and sacred sites of local communities. The region was also a vital sanctuary for the independence movement. The park protects rare animal species, including the yellow-crested cockatoo and various endemic bird species.
