Tucked away in a deep valley surrounded by high mountains, Mae Hong Son is often called the 'City of Three Mists'. The town is heavily influenced by Shan (Tai Yai) culture, visible in the unique architecture of its temples like Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, which sits atop a hill offering panoramic views stretching all the way to Myanmar. The peaceful atmosphere around Jong Kham Lake in the town center is especially magical at night. The surrounding province is a paradise for trekkers, offering glimpses into the lives of various hill tribes, including the famous Kayan villages. Traveling here via the Mae Hong Son Loop is considered one of the most spectacular motorcycle journeys in the world. Visitors should sample Shan noodles and local forest-inspired dishes. The best time to visit is from November to February, when the air is cool and the landscapes are lush. During March and April, the 'burning season' can lead to hazy skies.
