Poroto Mountains (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Poroto Mountains are a volcanic range situated in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, southeast of the city of Mbeya. This range is part of the Rungwe Volcanic Province and is characterized by a series of extinct volcanic cones and lush forest reserves. One of the most striking features of the Poroto Mountains is the Ngosi Crater Lake, a deep, emerald-green lake contained within a massive volcanic caldera at an elevation of 2,260 meters. The mountains receive high levels of precipitation, fostering the growth of dense evergreen forests that are home to rare bird species and primates. The fertile volcanic soil supports intensive agriculture, particularly the cultivation of potatoes and pyrethrum by the local communities. Due to their elevation and moisture, the Poroto Mountains play a crucial role as a catchment area for the region's rivers, contributing to the water supply of both Lake Malawi and the Ruaha River system.

Getting there
Travel to the area typically begins from the nearby city of Mbeya, which acts as a great base camp. From there, regional roads ascend into the mountainous, volcanic region.
📅
Best season
The dry season spanning from June to October is generally considered optimal. During the rainy months, the steep mountain roads frequently become muddy and impassable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The volcanic landscape is defined by steep flanks, dense mountain forests, and elevated crater rims. Trails near the lakes can become quite slippery underfoot.
🎒
What to bring
Due to the high altitude, dressing in easily adjustable layers is highly recommended. Sturdy hiking boots and a dependable rain jacket should always be part of your kit.

Parking
Vehicles can usually be parked at marked scenic viewpoints or close to the trailheads leading to the crater lakes. Guarded parking facilities, however, are extremely rare.
⚠️
