Fort Zeelandia (Taiwan)

Weather…

Fort Zeelandia, located in the present-day Anping District of Tainan, was one of the most significant fortifications of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) during the 17th century. Built between 1624 and 1634, it served for over 38 years as the administrative and military headquarters of Dutch rule over Formosa. The fort was strategically positioned on a sandy peninsula to control the entrance to Taijouan Bay and secure lucrative trade routes with China and Japan. Its iconic red brick walls, segments of which remain preserved to this day, testify to the robust European military architecture of the era. In 1662, after a grueling nine-month siege, the fort was captured by the forces of the Chinese loyalist Koxinga, signaling the end of Dutch colonial presence on the island. Today, the site is known as Anping Old Fort and features a museum and an observation tower that features visitors panoramic views of the harbor. It is widely regarded as the birthplace of Taiwan's modern history and is a protected national monument of immense cultural significance.
