Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa is one of the best-preserved examples of Crusader architecture in the Middle East, located in the heart of the coastal city of Tartus. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the foundations of an earlier Byzantine church, the structure uniquely combines massive Romanesque solidity with early Gothic elements. Designed as a fortified church, it served the Knights Templar as a crucial spiritual and military base during the Crusades. The architecture is characterized by its thick walls, vast cross-vaulted ceilings, and the simple yet dignified ornamentation of the capitals. Following the capture of the city by the Mamluks in 1291, the building lost its function as a cathedral and later served as a mosque and barracks. Since 1956, the former cathedral has housed the Archaeological Museum of Tartus, showcasing significant finds from the Phoenician, Greek, and Roman periods discovered in the region.
