Weissenburg Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

The ruins of Weissenburg Castle are located in the Niedersimmental region of the Canton of Bern and once served as the ancestral seat of the powerful Barons of Weissenburg. The fortress was likely constructed during the 13th century on a prominent rocky ledge to monitor and control access to the Simmental valley. After the noble family line ended in the 14th century, the castle was acquired by the city of Bern and eventually fell into ruin over the centuries. Today, substantial remains of the defensive walls and the main residential building are still visible, providing a glimpse into medieval fortification techniques. In the 19th century, the nearby Weissenburg-Bad was a famous thermal spa that attracted guests from all over Europe. The castle ruins are now a protected heritage site and offer hikers impressive views of the surrounding Alpine landscape of the Bernese Oberland.
