Bex is a municipality in the district of Aigle in the canton of Vaud, stretching from the Rhone plain up to the peaks of the Vaud Alps. The standout feature of Bex is its salt mines (Salines de Bex), which have been exploited since the 15th century. They are the only ones in Switzerland still actively extracting salt today and represent a major tourist destination where visitors can ride a small train deep into the mountain. Historically, Bex was an important staging post on the route to the Great St. Bernard Pass. The architecture in the town center reflects this historical wealth, with fountains and buildings from various periods. Agriculture is a vital economic pillar, particularly viticulture on the sunny slopes and fruit farming in the plain. Bex is also a starting point for mountain tours, such as to the Grand Muveran or the Diablerets massif. The climate here is notably mild, aided by the Foehn wind, giving the region an almost Mediterranean feel. Culturally, Bex is known for 'Bex & Arts', an open-air exhibition of contemporary sculptures held every three years in a vast park. Excellent rail connections via SBB and the narrow-gauge railway to Villars make Bex an attractive place to live and vacation. Gypsum production was also historically significant for the local industry.
