Ulvön, consisting of North and South islands, is the cultural gem of the Swedish High Coast. The main village, Ulvöhamn, sits sheltered along a narrow strait and is characterized by well-preserved red fishing huts lining the main street. The island's fishing tradition dates back to the 16th century, when fishermen from Gävle established their summer camps here. Internationally, Ulvön is famous as the birthplace of surströmming. Visitors can tour traditional processing sites and, if brave enough, taste the fermented specialty. A must-see is the Ulvö Gamla Kyrka, a wooden church from 1622 featuring beautiful wall and ceiling paintings depicting the lives of fishermen. The island also provides excellent hiking opportunities to the Lotsberget viewpoint, which overlooks the entire archipelago. In summer, the island is reachable by ferry from Docksta or Ullånger. While Ulvön is very quiet in winter, it bursts into life in July and August when guesthouses, restaurants, and small shops open their doors. Ulvön embodies idyllic turn-of-the-century Sweden set against a dramatic natural backdrop.
