Skellefteå is situated in the historical province of Västerbotten in northern Sweden and is internationally renowned as the 'Gold Town.' This moniker stems from the Boliden mining company, which operates one of Europe's richest ore deposits in the nearby vicinity. In recent years, the city has emerged as a hub for sustainable technology, most notably through the establishment of one of Europe's largest battery gigafactories (Northvolt). Skellefteå is also a global leader in modern timber construction, exemplified by the Sara Kulturhus, one of the world's tallest wooden buildings. The region's history was long defined by agriculture and fishing along the Skellefte river before 20th-century industrialization transformed the landscape. Socially, the city is a stronghold for ice hockey, with the Skellefteå AIK club being a central pillar of the community. The surrounding nature provides vast forests and proximity to the Gulf of Bothnia, contributing to a high quality of life. With a municipal population of around 75,000, the city is growing rapidly and spearheading Sweden's green industrial transition.
