Gävle is a historic port city located at the mouth of the Gavleån river on the Gulf of Bothnia, recognized as the oldest city in the Norrland region. It received its city charter as early as 1446 and rapidly developed into a major trading hub for iron and timber products from the northern Swedish forests. A significant event in its history was the devastating fire of 1869, after which the city was rebuilt with wide avenues and spacious squares to prevent future disasters. Gävle gained international fame for the "Gävle Goat" (Gävlebocken), a massive straw goat erected every Christmas since 1966, which frequently becomes the target of arson. The city is also the home of the well-known coffee brand Gevalia, taking its name from the Latin version of the city's name. Additionally, Gävle hosts the Swedish Railway Museum, featuring an impressive collection of historic locomotives. With its port, university, and proximity to the pristine nature of northern Sweden, Gävle remains an essential economic and cultural center for the region.
