Botkyrka is a historically rich and multicultural municipality located southwest of Stockholm, named after Saint Botvid, an 11th-century Christian missionary. Its most significant landmark is Botkyrka Church, a stone structure consecrated in 1176, standing as one of the oldest churches in the region. A cornerstone of the municipality's industrial heritage is the Tumba Paper Mill, which has been producing banknotes for the Swedish Riksbank since 1755 and now features a dedicated industrial museum. During the 1960s and 70s, Botkyrka underwent massive expansion as part of the 'Million Programme', leading to the development of modern urban centers like Hallunda and Norsborg. Today, the municipality is celebrated for its lively cultural scene, specifically Subtopia, a hub for contemporary circus and creative industries. Geographically, Botkyrka is located between Lake Mälaren to the north and the Baltic Sea to the south, offering varied coastal landscapes. Its diverse population makes it a prime example of modern Swedish society, supported by excellent links to the Stockholm metro and the E4 motorway.
