Sydkoster (Sweden)

Weather…

Sydkoster is the larger and more southern of the two Koster Islands located in the Skagerrak, off the Swedish west coast near Strömstad. Along with Nordkoster, it forms a unique archipelago that is part of the Kosterhavet National Park, Sweden first marine national park established in 2009. The island features a diverse landscape of rocky shores, sandy beaches, and fertile valleys with an unusually rich flora for its northern location. Geologically, the island consists mainly of granite and gneiss, polished smooth by glacial activity during the last ice age. Sydkoster is largely car-free, enhancing its tranquil atmosphere and making it a popular destination for cycling and hiking. The highest point on the island is Valfjäll, providing an expansive view over the surrounding waters to the Norwegian coast. Historically, the inhabitants relied on fishing and farming, but today sustainable tourism is the cornerstone of the island economy.
