Stora Sjöfallet National Park (Sweden)

Weather…

Stora Sjöfallet National Park, known in Sami as Stuor Muorkke, was established in 1909, making it one of Europe's earliest national parks. Spanning 1,278 square kilometers, it is now a central part of the Laponia UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park was originally named after its massive waterfall, once considered the "Niagara of the North," although its power was significantly diminished following the construction of the Suorva dam for hydroelectric power between 1919 and 1923. Despite this industrial intervention, the park has some of Sweden's most dramatic scenery, dominated by the Akka massif, which rises to 2,015 meters at its highest peak, Stortoppen, and is often called the "Queen of Lapland." The landscape transitions from deep glacial valleys to barren mountain plateaus and ancient pine forests bordering Lake Akkajaure. For the indigenous Sami people, the area holds immense spiritual value and remains a vital territory for traditional reindeer husbandry. The park serves as a natural bridge between Sarek and Padjelanta, providing a vast habitat for wildlife such as moose, reindeer, and the elusive wolverine.
