Piteå is located in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten, at the mouth of the Pite river on the Gulf of Bothnia. Founded in 1621, the town had to be relocated to its current site following a major fire in 1666. Historically, Piteå has been deeply connected to the timber and paper industries, which continue to anchor the local economy alongside cutting-edge research in renewable energy. A prominent feature of the area is Pite Havsbad, often called the 'Riviera of the North' due to its expansive sandy beaches and large water park. The city is also a cultural hub, home to the Piteå School of Music, which significantly influences the regional arts scene. The surrounding landscape provides ample opportunities for winter activities like ice sailing and dog sledding, as well as summer tourism in the local archipelago. With a population of about 23,000 in the urban center, Piteå balances its traditional industrial roots with modern innovations in education and technology.
