Örebro Castle (Sweden)

Weather…

Örebro Castle is a medieval fortification situated on an island in the river Svartån in the province of Närke. The earliest parts of the structure date back to the 13th century, likely established as a defensive keep during the reign of King Magnus IV to control the strategic river crossing. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Duke Charles, who later became King Charles IX, commissioned the transformation of the fortress into a grand Renaissance palace, adding the four iconic circular corner towers. Throughout its history, the castle has functioned as a royal residence, a seat of local government, and a state prison. It has been the site of several significant sessions of the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament), most notably in 1810 when Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was elected as the heir to the Swedish throne. Currently, the castle is a protected national monument, housing the official residence of the County Governor along with museum exhibits detailing its architectural and military history.
