Nora is one of Sweden's best-preserved wooden towns, forming together with Eksjö and Hjo the group known as the 'Three Wooden Towns'. The town's layout follows a grid pattern established in the 17th century, which was largely maintained following a major fire in 1731. Most of the residential buildings seen today date from the 18th and 19th centuries, characterized by their traditional wooden facades and courtyards that reflect the historical lifestyle of the Bergslagen mining region. Economically, Nora was deeply connected to the iron ore mining and processing industry, which provided wealth and stability for centuries. In 1856, Sweden's first standard-gauge railway, the Nora-Ervalla line, was inaugurated here, making the town a pioneer in Swedish industrial transportation. Today, the entire town center is protected as a national heritage site, offering visitors an authentic experience of a 19th-century Swedish trading and administrative hub.
