Glimmingehus (Sweden)

Weather…

Glimmingehus is recognized as the best-preserved medieval castle in Scandinavia, located in the province of Scania (Skåne). Construction of the fortress began in 1499 under the direction of Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, a Danish knight and admiral, during a period when Scania was a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. The castle was designed as a fortified manor house and stands as a premier example of late Gothic architecture with formidable defensive capabilities. Its massive walls, crafted from local quartzite, reach thicknesses of up to 2.4 meters, and the structure is equipped with numerous protective features such as murder holes, trapdoors, and narrow counter-clockwise spiral staircases to thwart intruders. The interior features sophisticated stonework and a grand knights' hall, reflecting the high social standing of its founder. Despite its formidable military appearance, Glimmingehus was never subjected to a direct siege and later served as a granary, which ironically aided in its preservation. Today, it is a significant historical site and museum operated by the Swedish National Heritage Board.
