Svaneholm Castle, located in the municipality of Skurup in Scania, was built in the 1530s by Mourids Jepsen Sparre. Originally designed as a closed Renaissance fortress on an island in Lake Svaneholm, the complex was remodeled and expanded several times over the centuries. A significant resident was the reformer Rutger Macklean, who inherited the castle in the late 18th century and initiated radical agricultural reforms from here that permanently changed Swedish peasant life. Since 1934, the castle has been owned by a cooperative and houses an extensive museum of local cultural history and crafts. The architecture today shows a mix of Renaissance elements and later additions, surrounded by an easy on the eye English landscape park. The exhibitions include historical textiles, furniture, and documents related to the history of the Skåne region.
