Central Suriname Nature Reserve (Suriname)

Weather…

The Central Suriname Nature Reserve was established in 1998 and covers an area of approximately 1.6 million hectares of pristine tropical rainforest. It accounts for about 12 percent of Suriname's total land area and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. Geographically, the reserve encompasses the upper watershed of the Coppename and Lucie rivers and includes parts of the Wilhelmina Mountains. The region is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, providing a habitat for species such as the jaguar, giant armadillo, and harpy eagle. The landscape is characterized by ancient granite monadnocks and tepuis, reflecting the geological history of the Guiana Shield. The reserve serves as a critical carbon sink and maintains a stable ecosystem largely untouched by human activity. Its remote location ensures that the diverse flora and fauna can flourish in a natural environment free from major industrial exploitation.
