Suzanna's Daal (Suriname)

Weather…

Suzanna's Daal is a former plantation in the Commewijne District, whose name is inextricably linked to one of the most notorious figures in Surinamese colonial history: Suzanna du Plessis. Established in the 18th century, the plantation was primarily focused on coffee production. Suzanna du Plessis, the plantation's heiress and mistress, became infamous through legends of her extraordinary cruelty toward enslaved people, making her a symbolic figure for the horrors of the slavery era. Historical accounts and literary works describe sadistic acts that deeply impacted the social conscience of later generations. Geographically, the plantation is located in a region that once served as the economic backbone of the Dutch colony, though today it has been largely reclaimed by the surrounding forest. Very few remains of the original buildings exist today, but the site remains an important location for historical research and the remembrance of the victims of the plantation system. Suzanna's Daal stands as a somber reminder of the need to confront the dark chapters of the nation's historical identity.
